grafted peony

Gansu Paeonia Rockii enjoys the name for distinctive and big atropurpureus, amaranth and redbrown spots at the petal base. The wild spcies of it not only distribute over Gansu’s south central area at an altitude of 1300-2800 meters, but also can be found in secondary forest of west Qinling Mountains where China’s Gansu, Sichuan and Shanxi province meet each other. White or pink flowers with single lobes and growing well in colder conditions 30℃ below zero characterize these wild Paeonia Rockii species. The area above-mentioned had been considered as the important birthplace of cultivated Chinese tree peony.

After the centuries-old domestication, at present, more than 300 Paeonia Rockii varieties distribute over Gansu central areas. They differed from the wild Paeonia Rockii species, boast of rich and bright colors, tall and large figure and strong fragrance. See the following for details of Gansu Paeonia Rockii. Tall and large figure: 2-3m in height, 3-4m corolla, over 15 lobules, little change of the leaf type as well as the long main leafstalk characterize them. Most varieties are suitable for fresh cut because of their annual prosperous growth.

Big flower, flamboyant color, strong fragrance, various shape; thick, smooth, and delicate petals;25 cm in flower diameter and 15cm in bud height; orderly arranged petals, changeable pistils and stamens cannot be reached by tree peony of central China.

Cold, drought and saline-alkali resistant: they can live through the winter(-40℃)without any artificial protections.

Easy to plant and little maintenance will be asked. The 3-10 years old nursery stocks can satisfy general planting conditions of which, both spring and autumn are regarded as the just time to plant it, but the priority should be given to the later.

The seeding, root division and graft are three ways to reproduce Gansu Paeonia Rockii. The Paeonia Rockii from the seeding will bloom 5 year later, the good flowers of Paeonia Rockii from the graft and the root division may not be seen till 2-3 years later which just to be their needed rejuvenation period although they may blossom at the year being planted. The plant disease and insect pests seldom occur to them although their leaves may be withered up by the mycosis in both hot and humid weather. Sprinkling the sterilizing agent on leaves will be preventive.
